Who We Are

Serving the community since 1961, WakeMed Health & Hospitals is the leading provider of health services in Wake County, North Carolina. 

WakeMed has three acute care hospitals, a physical rehabilitation hospital and a mental health hospital for a total of 1003-beds. We also have four healthplexes with stand-alone, 24/7 emergency departments and a variety of outpatient services. Our growing network of physician practices are home to more than 700 providers representing nearly every specialty. 

WakeMed is a private, not-for-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, consisting of 14 members representing our community. Led by President & CEO Donald R. Gintzig, the top priorities for the health system’s diverse and talented leadership team are ensuring patient safety; enhancing the patient and family experience; and delivering high-quality, high-value care that is both affordable and accessible to everyone who calls our community home.

WakeMed’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of our community by providing outstanding and compassionate care to all.

Our efforts focus not only on providing exceptional patient care when it is needed, but also on the wellness services and community outreach that engage and empower the people we serve, so they can take charge of their health. Delivered by our team of mission-driven providers, employees, administrators and volunteers — the best minds and biggest hearts — we help ensure the safest, highest quality care for all.

It doesn’t take long to realize that WakeMed is a unique organization and home to a culture that is unlike any other.

It’s a place where we gladly go above and beyond to help our patients, their families and each other, reaching far beyond our walls to help make our community a healthier place to live, work and play. It’s a place where people are proud to spend 40, 45 and even 50 years helping us work toward our mission.

We call this unique culture the Wake Way and it has been a vital part of who we are and what we do for more than 60 years.
