The Infectious Disease Clinical Specialist Pharmacist is responsible for development, implementation, and documentation of the antimicrobial stewardship program for the WakeMed Health & Hospitals system. The primary goal of the program is to ensure the optimal use of antimicrobial agents at WakeMed Health & Hospitals while decreasing the opportunity for antimicrobial resistance and avoiding the loss of current antimicrobial drug classes. In addition, other goals of the program will include the education of prescribers (including pharmacists, nurses and ancillary healthcare providers) in therapeutically efficacious and cost- effective therapy; decreasing adverse reactions and predisposition to secondary infections; improving patient care by shortening length of stay, preventing ADR and secondary infections; promoting conversion of intravenous therapy to oral antibiotics; consolidating antimicrobial formulary; controlling antimicrobial costs.
